In sad news, former Cumberland Law Dean John Carroll passed away on August 14 at age 79. He led Cumberland for 13 years, from 2001 until 2014. In his prior life, he worked as a civil rights lawyer at the Southern Poverty Law Center and served as SPLC's legal director before becoming a magistrate judge in the Middle District of Alabama. He was a good man and I feel his passing with particular sadness.
