John Eastman, the dean of Chapman University School of Law in southern California, is resigning Monday. He will seek the Republican nomination in the race for the post of state Attorney General. Eastman has a JD from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D from the Claremont Graduate School. He is a former clerk to Judge Luttig and Justice Thomas. He practiced with Kirkland and Ellis before joining the Chapman faculty in 1999. Dean Eastman would bring a lot of intellect to the AG post - but he's also got politics in his bones. In 1990, he was the Republican nominee in the race for California's 34th Congressional District. He lost in that race to Representative Estaban Torres by a 61-39 margin.
His publication list is here.
And yes...the Chapman dean search starts now!
Dean Eastman is leaving Chapman to lose an election? Something doesn't square up here. What's the story?
