Taboo Trades Podcast: Busted: Policing Women On Top With Courtney Cahill

My guest today is Courtney Cahill, a Chancellor's Professor of Law at UC Irvine School of Law. Professor Cahill is a scholar of constitutional law, anti-discrimination law, sex equality, and LGBTQ equality. Her work examines the role of disgust in lawmaking and the synergies between sex equality and LGBTQ equality. She joins us today to discuss her latest project, Busted: Policing Women on Top, forthcoming in 2026 from Oxford University Press.

 

Cahill attended Yale Law School after graduating from Princeton University with a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. UVA Law 3Ls Anthony Freyre and Kimberly Garcia co-host today’s episode.

Marc Miller Stepping Down as Dean of The University of Arizona Law

The University of Arizona College of Law has announced that Marc Miller will step down as dean on January 6.   Miller became dean in 2012.  He will return to the faculty.

The University of Akron School of Law is hiring an Assistant Professor of Academic Success. This is a full-time, twelve-month, non-tenure track appointment that may lead to presumptively renewable five-year contracts. The successful candidate will teach ten to twelve credits per year, focusing primarily on academic and bar success. They will also oversee the academic and bar preparation programs.

Candidates should have strong academic records (including a J.D. or its equivalent) and either experience in law practice or a judicial clerkship (or both). They should be able to show a strong interest and competency in teaching legal research and writing.

Akron Law has a collegial and supportive faculty and provides excellent mentorship to junior faculty. Northeast Ohio has a relatively low cost of living and is a great place to raise a family. Northern Kentucky University’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law invites applications for the position of Director of Academic Success and Bar Preparation, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2025. This is a 12-month, full-time, non-tenure-track position, and it covers both academic support and bar preparation.

The Director’s primary responsibility will be to work with students to help them develop the skills needed to reach their full academic potential for performance in law school and on the bar exam. Responsibilities will include a mix of the following: (1) designing and implementing academic support programs; (2) designing and assisting with the law school’s bar exam preparation programs; (3) teaching the law school’s bar preparation course; and (4) teaching the two-semester Legal Methods and Legal Studies courses for NKU Chase’s first year students. The Director will also supervise the Assistant Director. Candidates must be willing to work some evenings, so as to be able to teach and provide academic support for students in the evening division.

Applicants must have a J.D., a strong academic record, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, the ability to work collaboratively, and excellent communication skills. Experience in a law school academic support program or other relevant teaching experience is preferred. Candidates should also have an understanding of the dynamics of diversity (including first-generation college graduates) in higher education and a demonstrated ability to incorporate this understanding, as appropriate, in all levels of their work. Salary will be commensurate with experience, but we anticipate the salary being between $75,000 and $85,000 (plus full benefits) per 12-month year. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity be considered to teach additional courses for additional compensation.

Presentation on WHO Twin Principles at Law As Science Event

Fall 2024 Events WHO Says Countries Should be Self-Sufficient In (Unremunerated) Organs and Blood Speaker: Kimberly Krawiec (Charles O. Gregory Professor of Law, UVA School of Law) This presentation critiques the twin World Health Organization (WHO) principles of self-sufficiency and nonremuneration in organs and blood, urging a more sensible approach to the scarce resources of blood products and transplantable organs. WHO and other experts have failed to acknowledge the tension between self-sufficiency and nonremuneration in blood products--no country that fails to pay plasma donors is self-sufficient. Furthermore, international cooperation and cross-border transplantation provide numerous benefits, especially in smaller countries and those without well-developed domestic exchange programs. The combination of these twin principles denies to health care many of the benefits that trade has brought to so many other human endeavors and the effects are particularly damaging to low and middle income countries. Substances of human origin are special, but not so special that we prohibit plasma or organ donation. We should be open to exploring and experimenting with ways to bring to health care some of the benefits that trade has brought to so many other human endeavors, such as the production and distribution of food and lifesaving vaccines and other medicines. About the speaker:  Kim Krawiec’s current research analyzes “taboo trades” — exchanges that are contested by society and, in some cases, forbidden altogether. She has written on commercial surrogacy, egg and sperm markets, and sex work. At the moment, much of her work is on incentives for organ donation. Although financial incentives are part of the menu, she is most interested in nonfinancial incentives, such as kidney swaps, NEAD chains and priority systems that provide an incentive to donate. Krawiec hosts the podcast “Taboo Trades.” Another area of her research centers on the regulation of financial markets and business organizations. Krawiec has extensively examined the administrative process surrounding the Volcker Rule, a complex and highly contested provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. She has also researched corporate boards of directors. Through an ethnographic method, this work analyzes directors’ views on the workings of the corporate boardroom and board relations with management, with a special emphasis on directors’ views on race and gender diversity in the boardroom. Prior to joining academia, Krawiec was a member of the commodity and derivatives group at the New York office of Sullivan & Cromwell. She has served as a commentator for the Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (CEELI) of the American Bar Association and on the faculty of the National Association of Securities Dealers Institute for Professional Development at the Wharton School of Business. She earned her juris doctorate from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University. Krawiec also has taught law at Duke Law School, the University of North Carolina, Harvard and Northwestern, where she received the 1999-2000 Robert Childres Award for Teaching Excellence.

Usha Rodrigues Named Dean of University of Georgia Law

The University of Georgia School of Law has announced that Usha Rodrigues will be its next dean.  She is currently associate dean for faculty development at Georgia.  Rodrigues, who holds a JD from the University of Virgina, will take over on January 1.
