I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate

Louis Armstrong claimed that he wrote "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" and sold it for $10 that he never received. Most sources, however, attribute it to the violinist Armand Piron, who published it in 1922. Both Armstrong and Piron were from New Orleans, which adds either credibility or motive to Armstrong's story, depending on what you want to believe. The song has been covered hundreds of times over its 100 years history, in jazz, Dixieland, ragtime, jug band, and even rock genres. (Oddly, I couldn't find a clip of Armstrong doing the song. Maybe he boycotted it.)

 

North Carolina Central University Law Seeks Faculty

This just in:

North Carolina Central University School of Law (“NCCU Law”) is seeking candidates for four faculty positions to start July 1, 2024. Founded in 1939 to provide opportunities for African American students to become lawyers, our mission is to provide an excellent legal education to historically underrepresented students from diverse backgrounds. NCCU Law is in Durham, North Carolina, a city that is part of the Research Triangle Region, known for its technology companies and scholarly institutions.

Applicants with a juris doctor from an ABA-accredited law school, a distinguished professional background, and a strong commitment to teaching will be considered. Priority areas requiring excellent doctrinal teachers include Business Associations, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Decedents’ Estates, Property, and Torts. Successful applicants will be expected to teach in two or more of these areas. These are tenure-track positions.

We are also seeking exceptional clinical instructors in Family law and Juvenile Law, as well as Legal Writing instructors. These are term contract/non-tenure positions.

Daniel Kelly Named Dean of St. Thomas School of Law (MN)

The University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis has announced that Daniel Kelly will be its next dean.  He is currently professor of law, director of  the Law and Economics Program and the founding director of the Fitzgerald Institute for Real Estate at Notre Dame.  Kelly, who holds a JD from Harvard, will take over on July 1.

Northern Illinois Law Seeks Clinical Professor to Direct Business Clinic

This just in:

Northern Illinois University College of Law invites applications for an opening for an Assistant Clinical Professor of Law who will serve as Director of our Business Law Innovation Clinic. The incumbent will collaborate with the University’s College of Business. 

The Clinical Assistant Professor and Director will direct the daily operations of the Business Law Innovation Clinic, teach a law clinic seminar course each semester, directly supervise the legal work of clinic students, and work in partnership with the College of Business to develop and deliver programming. This is a twelve-month full-time position fully funded by Northern Illinois University.

Roscoe Jones, Jr. Named Dean of Drake Law

Drake University Law School  has announced that Roscoe Jones, Jr. will be its next dean.  He is currently partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s Washington, D.C. and co-chairs the firm’s public policy group.   Jones, who holds a JD from University of Virginia law school, will take over on July 1.
