O Come, Angel Band

"Angel Band" was originally a poem titled "My Latest Sun Is Sinking Fast," written by Jefferson Hascall in 1860. It was first set to music by William Bradbury and published in 1862, becoming a staple of gospel music in the following 150 years. It was popularized by the Stanley Brothers version in the soundtrack album of the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou."

Bradley Walker was born with muscular dystrophy and has been in a wheelchair his entire life. He has performed with the Oak Ridge Boys and other country stars. I especially like the fiddle player on this clip, who seems classically trained. He plays mandolin with the Oak Ridge Boys on the next clip.

The University of Georgia Seeks Law Dean

The University of Georgia (UGA), the flagship public, land-grant and sea-grant university of the state of Georgia, seeks an experienced and energetic leader to serve as the Dean of the School of Law.

The Dean serves as the academic and administrative leader of the School of Law. As such, the Dean must be distinguished in the field of law, a talented and resourceful administrator, and someone with the ability to develop and to communicate a shared vision of excellence that will build upon and enhance the School’s already strong programs and reputation. In addition to providing energetic and visionary leadership, the Dean must provide principled administrative guidance and advocacy for the mission of the School of Law in teaching, research, and public service/outreach. The Dean’s responsibilities include overall responsibility for leadership of the School; strategic planning and analysis of School operations; program and budget development; fundraising; alumni relations; and representing the School to the University administration and to external constituencies.

The Dean reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

 

Hiring Announcement: Texas Tech University School of Law

The School of Law at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month tenure-track Professor of Law position to begin in August of 2025. The position is open to both entry-level candidates and candidates who are on the tenure-track or tenured at another school. Candidates who satisfy Texas Tech University’s requirements to be hired with tenure will also be eligible to hold the Frank McDonald Endowed Professorship in business law.

Required Qualifications

In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience or demonstrated potential for working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Specific required qualifications are:

1. Candidates should have a J.D.;

2. Candidates should have a demonstrated potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service; and

3. Candidates should have demonstrated potential for excellence in the areas of Contracts and in corporate/business law, such as Business Entities, Securities Regulation, Mergers & Acquisitions, and related courses.

McKen Carrington Named Acting Dean of Texas Southern

McKen Carrington has been named acting dean of Texas Southern Law effective June 14.  Carrington joined the law school in 1984 and earned his JD from Albany.

Call for Papers: AALS Professional Responsibility Section (New Voices Workshop)

The AALS Professional Responsibility Section invites papers for its program “Professional Responsibility New Voices Workshop” that will take place during the 2025 AALS Annual Meeting.  The goal of this highly interactive workshop is to provide a forum for new voices and new ideas related to professional responsibility (PR), broadly defined. Many scholars might address PR without realizing it. We are interested in your potential contributions—whether you are an evidence scholar writing about the attorney-client privilege, a feminist interested in gender dynamics that affect lawyering, a critical race scholar commenting on how power plays out in legal systems, an ethicist exploring the moral foundations of the rules governing lawyering, or something entirely different. We encourage you to submit a proposal even if you are pursuing scholarship on PR for the first time, question whether your ideas really do relate to PR, or are reticent to submit for another reason. 

 

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:  The Workshop will be an opportunity to nurture the growth of a broad scholarly community in the field of Professional Responsibility and Legal Ethics. As such, it is a place to take risks and develop high quality work—test ideas, identify opportunities for further exploration, and dialogue with academics doing stimulating and cutting-edge scholarship.

 

We welcome consideration of works in different formats and stages of production. Workshop groups will include senior scholars in the field who will aid in the discussion of the pieces and provide feedback, along with extensive audience participation and involvement. Selected papers and topics, depending on their stage of development, should engage with the scholarly literature and make a meaningful original contribution to the fields of professional responsibility and legal ethics, broadly defined.

 

ELIGIBILITY: Full-time faculty members of AALS member law schools are eligible to submit papers. Preference will be given to junior scholars, and submissions from non-tenure-track faculty are welcome. Please note that all faculty members presenting at the program are responsible for paying their own annual meeting registration fee and travel expenses.

 

PAPER SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:  There is no formal requirement as to the form or length of proposals. Abstracts are welcome.  Email your submissions or questions about the workshop to the Chair-Elect of the AALS PR Section, Jon Lee ([email protected]), on or before September 13, 2024.  Please include “AALS PR New Voices” in the subject of the email.
