The Ohio State University invites nominations and applications for a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as Dean of the Michael E. Moritz College of Law. The Dean will serve as the chief academic officer of the Moritz College of Law and will build upon the college’s history as a transformative law school as part of a world-class research university with a land grant mission and set strategic priorities and a vision for the future of the college. The Dean will partner with a dynamic and accomplished faculty to educate the lawyers and leaders of tomorrow, advance innovative scholarship, better society, and address opportunities and challenges in legal education and professional practice. The Dean will continue to work collaboratively and promote interdisciplinary efforts that enrich the college’s scholarly and teaching missions. The college seeks an outstanding leader- communicator-scholar to build strong relationships, both internally and externally, while valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all forms. The Dean must also possess the ability to engage constructively with a variety of audiences both within and beyond the Buckeye network.
The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law is an integral part of one of the world’s great educational institutions. Founded in 1891 and consistently the top-ranked law school in Ohio, the Moritz College of Law has grown into one of the nation’s pre-eminent public law schools and one of the most respected law schools in the world.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean of the Moritz College of Law provides academic, intellectual, and administrative leadership for the Law School and works with key stakeholders to champion the college’s mission. The Dean will support and promote the efforts of an accomplished faculty and staff, further the college’s student-first philosophy and ensure student opportunity and success, advance impactful faculty scholarship, and promote service-based and experiential initiatives to prepare leaders to address emerging opportunities and challenges in a volatile world. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, fostering relationships with the greater university, legal, and professional communities; partner with donors and philanthropic entities to effectively fundraise; show evidence to hard work dedicated to the success of the students, faculty, staff and the university; and advance the scholarly pursuits and career aspirations of all students and faculty. The next Dean must possess a commitment to and track record of outcomes fostering a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. The Dean will work with all stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners to build on the college’s strengths and identify and implement new initiatives for continued success.
Additional responsibilities of the Dean include:
- • Attracting, developing, and retaining a world-class faculty;
• Being accessible to students and supporting all students in their aspirations;
• Nurturing an environment where people look forward to learning, working and serving, and where they feel valued and supported in their efforts;
• Collaboratively developing a strategic vision for the college’s future by planning and implementing the initiatives necessary to realize a bold vision, including preparing the college and its students to face emerging changes in the profession and technology as well as achieving an increased prominence in the law education community.
• Advancing the college’s commitment to The Ohio State University’s priorities, strategic goals, and shared values;
• Obtaining and managing financial and human resources to support key initiatives;
• Building strong relationships with advisors, alumni, and other donors, and leading the college’s fundraising efforts;
• Partnering with students, faculty, administration, staff, alumni, advisors, and community members on the College’s strategic priorities;
• Collaborating with fellow Deans on interdisciplinary programs, joint faculty appointments, and new academic initiatives;
• Innovate in legal pedagogy and strengthen the college’s efforts to expand educational programming, such as its online Master of Study in the Law degree; and
• Working with the Moritz College of Law National Council by keeping the members apprised of strategically important matters and soliciting and implementing the Council’s advice.
Desired qualifications of the Dean include:
- • A demonstrated track record of achievement as a strong and collaborative leader and administrator, providing evidence of a capacity to lead the college;
• A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship;
• An ability to effectively manage the college’s programs, financial resources, staff, and infrastructure;
• A demonstrated ability to partner with the college’s faculty, the President, the Provost, Deans, and other members of the University’s senior leadership team;
• A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion that is reflected within leadership outcomes;
• A commitment to valuing all in the college community, and to helping staff advance in their development and careers;
• Strong evidence of being eager and able to lead, recruit, retain, and support a diverse and eminent faculty, staff, and student body;
• A demonstrated and unwavering ethical compass;
• Experience being a strategic and entrepreneurial leader who has high aspirations and ambitions for the quality and reputation of the Moritz College of Law;
• A demonstrated ability to establish and pursue clear strategic priorities, to lead the fundraising effort needed to implement them, and to manage resources effectively to steadily advance those priorities;
• Excellent communication skills to connect effectively with a broad range of internal and external constituencies; and
• A passion for the broad mission of the college and a compelling vision for the important role of the college in the University, our society, and the world.
The Dean should hold a J.D. or equivalent and possess a record of recognized professional, scholarly, teaching, and service achievements that would warrant appointment as a tenured professor in the Moritz College of Law.
Compensation arrangements are competitive and commensurate with both experience and achievement.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has also twice honored The Ohio State University, most recently in 2015, with its Community Engagement Classification. The honor recognizes the university for its extensive engagement programming and how its mission, culture, curriculum, and resources are structured to support high-impact community engagement.
