As the chief academic and executive officer of the College, the Dean has primary responsibility for the faculty and academic professional staff development, budgetary oversight and planning, academic and curricular issues, fundraising, and facilities development.
The new Dean will be pivotal in positioning the College and University as national and international leaders in areas represented by the College. The Dean will provide visionary leadership that will position the College and the campus for continued innovation and success. The Dean will provide leadership for building and enhancing key partnership and collaborations with units across campus. The Dean will be a strong advocate and spokesperson for the College both on campus and with external partners and stakeholders, including alums. While enhancing the diversity of the College, the Dean will value the contributions of diverse faculty, staff, and students.
With a nationally renowned faculty, a rich and diverse curriculum, and the expansive resources of a world-class, comprehensive research university, Illinois Law features a first-rate academic program designed to prepare students to excel in their future professional careers. The College of Law has signature strengths in the cross-disciplinary study of law, including Law and Social Science, with particular emphasis on Empirical Legal Studies; Law and Technology, capitalizing on the tradition of the Urbana campus in computer science and engineering and its strength in cutting-edge innovation; and Law and Finance, building on the talents of a preeminent bankruptcy faculty as well as nationally recognized departments of finance and accounting. Continuing its proud tradition of training lawyers, government officials, and legal educators, College of Law has a robust curriculum, and has launched four new clinics in the last five years which include, Immigration Clinic, Medical Legal Partnership Clinic, Veterans Legal Clinic and launching Fall 2023, First Amendment Clinic. A new center, the Kimball R. and Karen Gatsis Anderson Center for Advocacy and Professionalism was established in 2021.
Successful candidates will bring (a) a demonstrated track record of achievement as a strong and collaborative leader and administrator, providing evidence of a capacity to lead Illinois Law; (b) sound, data-driven, and transparent decision making as it relates to strategic growth; (c) demonstrated ability to partner effectively with faculty and academic leaders; (d) an ability to foster the belonging of all, diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its forms (i.e., racial, gender, socio-economic, intellectual, methodological, disciplinary, and others); (e) strong evidence of being eager and able to lead, recruit, retain, and support a diverse and eminent faculty, staff, and student body; (f) experience being a strategic and entrepreneurial leader who will have the highest aspirations and ambitions for the quality and reputation of Illinois Law; (g) a demonstrated ability to establish and pursue clear strategic priorities, to lead the fundraising effort needed to implement them, and to manage resources effectively to steadily advance those priorities; (h) knowledge of the trends for legal education integrating practice with theory; (i) demonstrated outcomes showing value of experiential learning and supporting the work of clinical and legal practice faculty; (j) knowledge of the mental health and wellness needs for students, staff, and faculty; (k) demonstrated ability to effectively advocate within the construct of a complex public institution; (l) an ability to communicate effectively across all internal and external constituencies, including alumni in an articulate, inspiring and diplomatic way. Candidates should possess a J.D. or equivalent degree(s), and a record of distinguished achievement in scholarship, research, and teaching that would warrant appointment as a tenured Full Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The position of Dean of the College of Law reports to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost and is a senior administrative position with a seat on the Council of Deans. This full-time, 12-month appointment has a negotiable start date with salary commensurate with experience.
