The Touro University Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center is pleased to announce that it is again seeking applicants for an appointment to its Legal Process (Legal Research and Writing) faculty starting in August 2023. We have already hired one Legal Process professor for next year; however, we are now able to hire another one.
Legal Process is a six-credit, first-year course. Students receive three credits in the fall semester and three credits in the spring semester. In addition to the standard focus on predictive writing in the fall and persuasive writing in the spring, students are introduced to client interviewing. They are also introduced to client counseling and/or negotiation.
After two successive one-year contracts, Legal Process professors can apply for presumptively renewable three-year contracts. Following a successful three-year contract, LP professors with a record of scholarly publications and/or substantial service outside of the law school may apply for renewable five-year contracts. Legal Process is a directorless program; professors enjoy the same level of autonomy as the doctrinal faculty, as well as the same access to travel, scholarship, and other professional development funds.
Legal Process professors are involved in all aspects of law school life, including chairing and serving on major committees and serving as advisors to student organizations. Legal Process professors attend faculty meetings and vote on all matters other than tenure, promotion, and retention.
A candidate must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and a commitment to teaching in an environment dedicated to excellence in teaching and mentoring of students. We look for innovative faculty with a preference for both practice and teaching experience. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to service to legal education and to the wider community as well as a desire to engage in the intellectual life of the Law Center. With one of the most diverse student bodies in the country, Touro Law Center is dedicated to the aims of diversity and inclusion and strongly encourages applications from those who would contribute to that diversity, as defined in the broadest sense. Applicants are expected to be willing and capable of teaching in-person and remotely, and familiar with best practices in both modalities.
Touro Law Center, a member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), is part of Touro University. Established in 1970 to focus on higher education for the Jewish community, Touro University has grown to serve a widely diverse population of over 18,000 students across thirty-five schools. We are uniquely attuned to the importance of an education for students of all backgrounds and circumstances.
Located in beautiful and historic Long Island with its many beaches, coastlines, and parks, Touro Law Center has a unique location directly across the street from the federal and state courts, providing substantial opportunities for teaching and learning. Within the New York City metropolitan area, we are a train ride to the City and an even shorter train ride to JFK Airport.
If interested, please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a teaching statement, a research agenda, and a list of three professional references to the Touro University Human Resources portal here. If you have any questions about the position, please contact Professor Laura Dooley, ld[email protected], Chair of the Faculty Appointments Committee.
