From an email message I received this morning:
The University of Illinois College of Law is excited to share that registration is now open for the Anderson Center for Advocacy and Professionalism’s upcoming symposium: Navigating the Intersection of Advocacy and Professionalism. Lawyers are required to be zealous advocates for their clients, but their advocacy is bound by the rules of the legal profession. Those rules, and attendant norms, limit the claims lawyers may bring, the arguments they may make, and how they advocate. This symposium examines the intersection of advocacy and professionalism in multiple contexts. The symposium will be held on October 7th in-person at Winston & Strawn, LLP in Chicago, but virtual attendance is welcomed via Zoom.
The symposium begins with a panel moderated by the University of Illinois College of Law Dean, Dean Vikram D. Amar, titled, “Election Law – Where Are the Red Lines,” with Congressman Eric Swalwell, Professor Catherine Ross of The George Washington School of Law, Matthew Morgan of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, and Ryan Germany, General Counsel, Georgia Secretary of State serving as panelists. We then will examine professionalism in family advocacy, with a panel titled “Family Law: Ground Zero for Incivility and Professional Challenges, moderated by Erika Harold, Executive Director, Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism, with Judge Debra Walker, Professor Stephanie Tang of Baylor Law School, and Brad Trowbridge, Circuit Court of Cook County Domestic Relations Guardian Ad Litem serving as panelists. The final panel considers professionalism in the criminal law context, with Professor Andrew Leipold of the University of Illinois School of Law moderating a panel titled, “Ethical Considerations for Criminal Lawyers.” Panelists include Professor Irene Oritseweyinmi Joe of UC Davis School of Law , Stacy Ludwig, Director of Professional Responsibility Advisory Board (Department of Justice), Dan Webb of Winston & Strawn and BJay Pak of Alston & Bird.
The Honorable Thomas Kirsch, United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit will provide the keynote address, titled, “Judicial Ethics – Overview of the Existing Codes and Proposals for Change.”
Registration for both in person and Zoom attendance is here. CLE is available for Illinois attorneys. Please contact Prof. Tony Ghiotto, Director of the Anderson Center for Advocacy and Professionalism, at [email protected] with any questions.
