IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law invites applications for a visiting assistant professor (VAP) appointment to teach legal writing in its J.D. program starting in the fall of 2022. The professor will teach (1) one section each (approximately 30-32 students) of Legal Writing I, a 3-credit course taught in the fall semester that meets 4 hours per week, and (2) Legal Writing II, a 2-credit course taught in the spring semester that meets 3 hours per week. Both courses meet twice weekly. The professor may also teach one additional course, depending on curricular needs and the professor’s interest. Chicago-Kent’s nationally recognized legal writing program combines long-term legal writing professors with visiting assistant professors who are at Chicago-Kent for 1 to 4 years. This announcement is for a visiting assistant professor position.
Term: A candidate hired as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Legal Writing will receive a one- year contract that may be renewed for an additional year (or more, up to a total of four years, but more typically two or three years).
Qualifications: Candidates should have strong academic records (including a J.D. or its equivalent) and, ideally, some experience in American law practice or a judicial clerkship. Candidates must have received their J.D. degree by 2019 or earlier. The VAP position at Chicago- Kent is especially suitable for professors who ultimately seek a tenure-track position at another law school and who hope to pursue the writing of scholarship during their time as a VAP.
