"The Dark End of the Street" is said to have been inspired when the writers, Dan Penn and Chips Moman, were caught cheating at cards during a DJ convention in 1966. First recorded by James Carr, and shortly afterward by Percy Sledge, it has been covered many times since. I am slightly embarrassed to say that I first heard it on The Gilded Palace of Sin album by the Flying Burrito Brothers, lead vocal by Gram Parsons. I cannot find videos for the most iconic versions, so this post has more than the usual number of audio clips.
Audio only (first of many, but it seemed worth doing)
