In a move that is believed to be the first of its kind in the United States, Somerville, Massachusetts has passed a domestic partnership ordinance that is inclusive of polyamorous families. As various scholars, including Hadar Aviram, Gwendolyn Leachman, and me in the United States and Stefan Ossman in Austria, have discussed, polyamorous groups tend to have a complex and sometimes ambivalent relationship to rights advocacy. This makes the development in Somerville particularly momentous.
