Has there ever been a sweeter sound than Doc Watson's "Deep River Blues," which he explains in Smithsonian video at the bottom of this post.
It takes some courage to cover a Doc Watson song, but it has been done:
Mandolinist Ralph Rinzler was an original member of The Greenbriar Boys, a headline act on the Greenwich Village folk scene (Bob Dylan opened for them in the early 1960s), who later became a folk music curator at the Smithsonian. In this video he introduces Doc Watson, who then tells the story of how he came to play "Deep River Blues."
The Delmore Brothers original 1933 recording (audio only):
My friend, would you consider this amazing music Bluegrass? I happen to love just about all folk music, and these videos were a delight--so is Bluegrass and Deep River Blues the same thing?
