"San Antonio Rose" was originally written by Bob Wills as an instrumental in 1938. Lyrics were added by members of his band, The Texas Playboys, and the song was re-recorded under the name "New San Antonio Rose" in 1940, eventually selling over 2,000,000 copies. The song has been covered repeatedly over eight decades, usually (but not always; see below) with a vocalist.
