The University of Mississippi School of Law invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice whose primary responsibility will be directing a comprehensive program to ensure bar exam passage and overall academic success.
Job Responsibilities:
• Implement Program to Ensure Bar Exam Passage
• Teach Bar Skills Class and Advanced Legal Analysis Class
• Review the content of and methods used in the law school’s existing bar skills class and advanced legal analysis class to evaluate and improve their efficacy
• Counsel students about bar preparation, success strategies, the bar application process and requests for exam accommodations
• Research, track, and analyze best practices for bar exam strategies
• Monitor, track and report bar success and failure for the ABA and the law school
• Analyze and prepare data reports (g.p.a, diversity, bar passage rates, etc.)
• Provide recent graduates studying for the bar exam with support
• Counsel graduates retaking the bar exam regarding effective strategies for success
• Serve as the law school’s liaison to commercial bar preparation companies
• Establish and maintain relationships with bar examiners in Mississippi
• Propose improvements in the bar application process and the bar exam
• Direct Advising Program
• Solicit faculty members to participate
• Follow-up with students and participating faculty during the year
• Direct Academic Support Program
• Advise and counsel JD students, including those near or below thresholds for academic probation or who present risk factors correlated to lower bar passage rates
• Promote strategies to address potential barriers to academic success in diverse populations, including first-generation students, minority groups, and those with identified learning challenges
• Develop and monitor academic recovery plans for individual students
• J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
Preferred Experience
• Bar Membership in U.S. (may be inactive)
• Experience working in bar support, tutoring, counseling, or other academic teaching
• Knowledge of the UBE, MBE, MEE, MPT and MPRE
• Knowledge of educational theories
• Effective oral and written communication with individuals and groups
• Knowledge of learning and teaching strategies for law students
• Experience working with diverse populations
Job Details
• Start Date: August 2020
• Salary: Commensurate with experience
• 9-month renewable contract
• Longer term contracts may be awarded after probationary period
• This is a non-tenured position. The Assistant Professor of Practice is eligible for promotion (to Associate Professor of Practice and then to Professor of Practice)
