My friend Kirk Savage will deliver the lecture, "Beyond the Confederacy: The Challenge of White Supremacy in the Memorial Landscape" at Pitt on March 15 as part of the celebration of his installation as the William S. Dietrich II chair at Pitt. Kirk is the author of the fabulous book Standing Soldiers, Kneeling Slaves: Race, War, and Monument in Nineteenth Century America, about Civil War monuments. You can hear his discussion about the Washington Monument at NPR's Backstory here. Last year when NFL players began to take a knee during the National Anthem, I wrote him and said his next project should be called "Standing soldiers, Kneeling NFL players." The illustration is the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Memorial in Pittsburgh.
