This study, provided in the attached excel sheet, provides information on all deans at non-US law schools in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa. Email contacts and hyperlinks are included in the study, along with information about degree profile.
Degrees were most commonly awarded from the country’s own institutions. Degrees were also significant from Cambridge and Oxford, and a very limited list of degrees from Europe. In relation to US based degrees: qualifications from Yale and Columbia appeared more than once, Stanford and Georgetown and a few other universities appeared once. Harvard was not represented. The overwhelming number of degrees were in law-oriented disciplines.
Higher qualifications were most prevalent with Australia and New Zealand, and appear less common especially in South Africa.Overall, men held more PhD level qualifications, but in some countries the only woman held the only PhD (e.g., New Zealand) and in Australia, there is a higher percentage of females than males with PhDs.
The gender ratio disproportionately favours men, though there are noticeable differences between on the one hand, Australia and South Africa, where the difference is relatively slight, and Canada and New Zealand, where the respective difference is 5 to 18 and 1 to 5.
There are a wide variety of factors among the candidates not addressed in this study, which might provide useful for comparison: age, class, course expertise in teaching, grants, past work experience, politics, publications, and so forth. Likewise, country and institution contexts could be further nuanced. Gender and race remain visible challenges. Our primary purpose here, however, is simply to provide useful information for institutions and scholars wishing to possibly expand their communication to other non-US english speaking law schools.
