A few of our readers lived in San Francisco in the 1970's and 1980's, and some of you - at least a couple, I hope - had the chance to experience Hunan Restaurant on Kearney Street. It was a hole in the wall, jammed to the gills with customers, and it served the best Chinese food I'd ever had. That was Henry Chung's place, and later he opened other locations, and created the chain Henry's Hunan. Nothing ever beat the food in that first place though. I was a legal assistant at Heller, Ehrman back then and there was no better way to blow $6 than a lunch run over to Hunan. Henry Chung passed away recently. Would that we could all bring such joy to others as Henry Chung did for his customers.
I was in Berkeley in the 1970s, but there was no way I could have paid $6 for lunch.
