I've been focused of late on work and family and have not had much to say in the faculty lounge. This will continue for some time yet, maybe quite some time. However, I did have the chance to take a picture of an eighteenth century blacksmith shop. Looks pretty grand for the middle of the eighteenth century, I have to confess, but this supposedly is from the middle of the eighteenth century.
After I investigated this a little I realized that a subject from one of my first articles -- which was based on a register of hundreds of indentured servants -- may have visited this place. Actually, now that I'm thinking on this, I want to post pictures of a few other places my subjects may have visited. I'll get those next summer -- prime among them will be the iron furnaces of southeastern Pennsylvania.
Does anyone know where this blacksmith shop is?
it could be Salem, Virginia

Good thought, JLT. I've been surprised at how many blacksmith shops there are still around from this era. This is a little north of Salem, Virginia.
