I've been very quiet this fall, as I've been attending to lots of other business -- teaching, scholarship, and otherwise -- and I'm guessing this will continue well into 2017. Still, I had the chance recently to take a picture of a building that I've had my eye on for some time. So I thought that I'd post a trivia question about it. This is an early nineteenth century public building. I'm not thinking this was a courthouse, but it was used for other public purposes. Sorry I don't have a better image of this; I had a very limited amount of time that day and couldn't wait for the sun to get into a better position. One of these days maybe I'll have a chance to go back there and dig into the county court records, especially the probate records from this place. I'm certain there are some gems in there.
And let me say happy new year to everyone.
I believe that's the Market House in Fayetteville, North Carolina?

Owen is, as always, right. This is quite an impressive building -- but I think wikipedia is incorrect when it says this is the only building like it in US. I'm pretty sure I've seen a similar market building (with open stalls on the ground floor and an enclosed, public space above) at least one other time. I want to say it was on a trip to Harper's Ferry. I stopped by some neighboring towns in West Virginia. I'm pretty sure one of those towns has a quite similar looking, antebellum public market. But I'm going to need to think on this some more.
