My thanks to everyone at the Faculty Lounge for having me around for the month. I look forward to it.
Together with my colleague Prof. Raul Ruiz, I teach in FIU College of Law’s Academic Excellence Program. The goals of the program are to support students’ success in law school and on the bar exam and to help prepare them for practice. Our students have performed well on recent bar exams, and I’ve been asked to talk about what we’re doing to support their success.
My first post will discuss in a general way the philosophy we’ve adopted in the AEP to support students. In subsequent posts, I’ll detail the methods that stem from that philosophy.
If I have time towards the end of my month here, I’d also like to discuss one of my other areas of interest: FERPA, the federal law protecting student privacy interests. Spoiler: Law schools sometimes scuttle important programs out of an "abundance of caution" when a close analysis would show that FERPA actually would not impact those programs.
I look forward discussing these topics.
