Didn't the divided Republicans of 1964 win the next two elections? I suppose the explanation is that the Democrats divided immediately after the Republicans did, so you have two parties cracking up at the same time.

Steve Lubet

Good point, Howard. And yes, that's right.

anon

"With only a few notable exceptions – Sen. Ben Sasse and the two former presidents Bush – Republicans are lining up behind their presumptive nominee." Wrong. The level of resistance to a front runner is far wider and deeper than Lubet suggests.

One wonders which party members are more inclined to grab the tail of the one in front of them, and fall in line, no matter what the evidence shows! (Can you think of ANY examples of hypocritical allegiance in your own party, Steve?

"the divided Republicans of 1964 lost two in a row, and so did the divided Democrats of 1968" Huh?

And, what is the point of this? To recommend that the Republican party unite, to avoid the supposed outcome you postulate, gleefully celebrate that it won't, condemn it for not unifying behind the opposing party, or condemn it for unifying (which, according to you it has), or condemn it for not unifying and claim that it won't?

How about just a little examination of these condemnations before you post? Your steady focus on the little picture, while ignoring the systemic forces that are roiling both parties is just so partisan and tiresome. YOur whole approach is exactly what is wrong with our political culture (everyone basically agrees with this, but usually, after condemning partisanship, simply blames the "other side" for it ... get it?)

A.

I'd support Jefferson against Trump, too. Bot that isn't this year's choice.

The problem is not a divided Republican party. It's the dumbed down Wal-Martization of it. The Oregon wankers who took control over that bird sanctuary in Oregon are in control. It's the drunkenly, domestically violent party of Sarah Palin's family. Of course, all of its Obama's fault.
