Touro Law Center, located in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, has just posted their invitations for nominations for the law dean. They are anticipating having a dean in place on August 1, so this will be a fast search. Cribbing from the announcement:
Touro College was established in 1970 with the mission to educate, to serve, to perpetuate and to enrich the historic Jewish tradition of tolerance and dignity. Created as an independent institution that would support and strengthen the Jewish community, Touro has remained steadfast in its commitment to Jewish continuity and, more broadly, to humankind. ...
Touro’s core values are drawn from our Jewish heritage and the Jewish intellectual tradition, focusing simultaneously on individual development and the greater good. Touro provides men and women an environment that nurtures personal growth and intellectual inquiry in superior academic programs. Touro also offers neighborhood-based programs that serve, and encourage service to, under-resourced communities.
The ideal candidate will have a distinguished professional background that evidences the candidate's potential for leadership in achieving and maintaining excellence and innovation in teaching, research, scholarship and service in the public interest, as well as fundraising.
Candidates may demonstrate the capacity to fill the position by records of distinction in any of the following fields: legal education, the judiciary, the practice of law or government service.
The Search Committee will begin reviewing candidates immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Applications should include a statement summarizing interest, accomplishments, distinguishing strengths, leadership style, and commitment to research, teaching, and service; a detailed curriculum vitae; and a list of three references. To ensure full consideration, inquiries, nominations and applications should be submitted by July 1, 2016, in confidence, to: Stephen J. Trachtenberg, Consultant, Korn Ferry and Kenneth L. Kring, Senior Client Partner, Global Education Practice, Korn Ferry, 1835 Market Street, Suite 2000, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
Wow. I can't wait to read the comments here (if any come in).
Perhaps our enlightened colleagues can come in to explain why Touro should be boycotted (just being against Israel, you know, not Jews per se).
Or, perhaps they will explain the reason that the announcement above seems a bit, well, biased and self referential and seems to appeal to tribalism instead of diversity and equality.
Or, perhaps, they will explain the reason that Jews in academia are overrepresented and that there are just too many of them. A comment like "Oh no, not another one" (upon seeing a picture) will be a completely appropriate reaction if yet another middle aged, white, Jewish male is chosen! Watch out, Touro!
Yes, enlightened ones. Enlighten us.

Perhaps they will also observe that Touro is likely out of compliance with the ABA bar passage requirements and whoever walks into the deanship gets to take over what is likely the worst law school in the greater NY Metro area?

Former Editor:
Maybe they should hire Dean Martin. If he can save a plane load of people from certain disaster, he can certainly rescue this law school.
