I finally have cover copy, so I guess the book is really going to come out. It's scheduled for publication late this summer and I'll be blogging a ton more once the book is out. I'm very much looking forward to talking about the sources -- which are as varied as student literary society debates and graduation addresses to student literary magazines and faculty books and articles, judicial opinions, debates in Congress, and novels by both proslavery and anti-slavery authors.
The top illustration is a print from a book on the Nat Turner rebellion; the bottom illustration is a pre-printed contract for the rental of slaves owned by Washington College (now Washington and Lee University).
