Nebraska Law Dean Susan Poser has been named the new provost of the University of Illinois - Chicago. She will take over in February. Poser has served as Nebraska's dean since May, 2010 and her tenure has been highly successful. This is a particularly notable move given that UIC doesn't have a law school. Nebraska will name an interim dean shortly. More details here.
I will bet dollars to donuts that UIC will now seriously explore opening a new law school! There was talk of it a few years back. Nine is not enough in Illinois! Just like the ad to attract new Sport Clips franchise owners. "Get into the money game!" Dean, before you go down that path, please consider that Illinois has 92,000 registered attorneys and that there are hundreds of applicants, veterans and newbies for each job. My buddy out over 30 years from a highly regarded law school can not find a job. He was choking back tears as he recently described a job networking event and most of the folks in attendance had two attributes: They were either lawyers (four) or just had some college. Welcome Dean. UIC does not need a law school.
