I have just received a letter from Columbia's dean Gillian Lester with the sad news that Alfred Hill, a long-time Columbia Law professor has passed away. He was 98. Professor Hill co-taught my torts class (along with Willis Reese) in the fall of 1987. I remember him fondly, even though this is now many years ago. He was a very thoughtful and kind person. And also took doctrine very seriously. I'm beginning to wonder if doctrine is one of the topics that's going to make a comeback in the legal academy.
I also learned Torts from Hill and Reese, back in the fall of 1977. What a team! So sad that they are both gone--but what a blessing that Al was with us for 98 years.

I add my praise for Hill and Reese's torts class, in 1979. It was a classic, and they were class acts.

My condolences to his family. I didn't know him, but it's amazing to think that he became a law professor during the Vinson Court.
