Earlier this week, Julie Schumacher became the first woman to win the Thurber prize for humor writing for her epistolary academic spoof, Dear Committee Members. The book is well worth a read for the structure as well as the story and also for a good laugh. The entire story is told through a series of recommendation letters written by a somewhat jaded creative writing professor.
This year was also a first in that the three finalists for the prize were all women. Full story here.
"Somewhat jaded" may be an understatement! Loved this book and the jaded professor. Laugh-out-loud funny. My husband, who is not in academia, laughed his way through it, too. It is a quick, easy read. I've recommended it to many, all of whom report that they enjoyed it.
