For anyone interested in Pippin's war experience, Archives of American Art has a small collection of digitized images online-- three notebook/journals and a few miscellaneous letters. http://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/horace-pippin-notebooks-and-letters-8586/more#inventory

I'm curious about the time on the clock--3:15. Does it have some special significance? Jeremiah 3:15 about forgiving a formerly unfaithful nation comes to mind but so does the familiar Genesis 3:15 on enmity & crushing the head of the serpent or Isaiah 3:15 on crushing the poor. Maybe it just looks good. Perhaps that's also why the tree in Pippin's image seems larger than it was. An old Chester County Courthouse postcard shows that there was once a larger tree near the statute, although not one that would have shadowed the monument in the way Pippin does.
