I've not been using clickers for as long as I have been teaching, because I've been teaching longer than there have been clickers. I agree with your comments, and share my opinion that requiring participation is a good thing (I use clickers to take attendance, which "encourages" participation), and that grading some of the clicker questions is beneficial for a variety of reasons (and before there were clickers I used paper to administer multiple assessments during the semester).
