I have just heard that sad news that Dickson Bruce has passed away. He was a history professor at the University of California-Irvine and author of a number of books. Bruce's The Rhetoric of Conservatism: The Virginia Convention of 1829-30 and the Conservative Tradition in the South (1982) looms large in my thinking about Virginia and the old South. Some of his other important work includes Violence and Culture in the Antebellum South (1979), The Kentucky Tragedy: A story of Conflict and Change in Antebellum America (2006) and Earnestly Contending: Religious Freedom and Pluralism in Antebellum America (2013).
H/t John Mayfield of Samford University.
