As others have now acknowledged, our friend and colleague Dan Markel, of Florida State Law, died today. More details, and a remembrance, are appropriately found at his blawg.
Few, if any, law professors who have had a broader impact on the legal academic community over the past decade. He has deeply touched many individual lives. Over this one awful day, so many people - colleagues, classmates, friends, students - have come out to share memories and thoughts about Dan.
He leaves behind family and dear friends and their pain is surely immeasurable.
I imagine I am not alone in feeling the sense that, although I knew Dan only moderately well, the emotional weight of the loss is nonetheless immense.

Thank you for this, Dan. I'm shocked and saddened by this news; his families, friends and colleagues will be in my thoughts. Dan was an incredibly thoughtful and creative scholar and a great community-builder. I am sorry I'll not have the chance to learn from him and enjoy his good humor, wit, and company.
