; This courthouse was built, I think, in 1860 -- so it's a very late antebellum courthouse. (It may not have been completed until early 1861 -- there's some confusion on the web about this.) Does't look like the ones we usually see from this era, does it? I guess the Italianate style was taking over then. But not quite the Italianate look I associate with the post-war era. (This, by the way, is the rear of the Courthouse. The good ones of the front have the name in the picture -- so that would be a little too easy.) Where is it? Once we get this figured out I want to talk about the Confederate monument that's out front of the courthouse. It's an example of a monument that's more conciliatory than many -- and so is part of a series of posts I'm writing on the Confederate flag controversy at W&L.
Update: Now that Bill Turnier has identified the courthouse here's a picture of the front of the courthouse.
Caldwell County Courthouse in Yanceyville, NC.

You got this right, Bill. Quite a building, isn't it? It looks to my eyes more like a post-war courthouse. It's a dramatic shift from the imitation of the classical world to that of the Italian renaissance. I'm going to post something about the Confederate monument out front of this courthouse soon and also I'll put up a link to a picture of the front of the courthouse, too.
