I would wager that a semester-length law school seminar could successfully be built around this one 15-minute segment from the radio show "This American Life."
Retribution. Rehabilitation. Incapacitation. The purposes of legal rules. How to allocate the risk of mistake. Legal ethics and duties of candor to tribunals. It's just incredibly rich. And a very, very well-told story.
Listened to it last night at your recommendation. It really is a remarkably tragic situation. Seems like a case where a gubernatorial pardon ought to be seriously explored.
