Most of Lower Manhattan heads into the fifth day without power, water or heat. Electricity is expected to come on over the weekend in Manhattan, but some other parts of the tri-state area may be without power for weeks. The National Guard was visible yesterday, handing out food and water at designated areas. But the American Red Cross is nowhere to be found. To be sure, much of "disaster relief" comes long after the disaster has occurred, but in the meantime, there are lots and lots of people with real, concrete needs.
After September 11, people poured into Lower Manhattan wanting to help. Now? Nobody.
