Speaking of last minute summer reads, I would recommend Christopher Buckley’s droll Supreme Courtship. Pepper Cartwright, a colorful judge from Texas with a wildly popular television courtroom show, finds herself appointed by the President, for reasons that are too nutty to explain in full, as the next associate justice of the United States Supreme Court.
The rambunctious Pepper begins as an honorable ingénue, surrounded by scoundrels in Washington who want to demolish her candidacy by painting her as appallingly unqualified. We keep rooting for her, though, and in the end, she emerges, as we knew all along, with her dignity restored.
The characters are unforgettable, and Buckley, presumably the omniscient narrator, tells the tale with boyish mischief; an adult cartoon that isn’t cartoonish.
Reading the book, especially at night, after a long day of writing, is like sipping Chardonnay with a lively and entertaining friend.
And if anyone's eyes are too tired to read, the audiobook version read by Anne Heche is excellent!
