A while back I blogged about the differences between browsing real life paper books in bookstores and browsing for good reads on e-readers. With the recent announcement of the demise of Borders (which pretty much just leaves Barnes and Noble and local libraries in my neck of the woods), I started thinking again about what we're losing with the demise of the brick and mortar bookstore. One thing I wonder about is what will happen to cover art if we all move to e-readers? Obviously, most current e-readers (and audiobooks) still rely on cover art to match the hard copy book. Some e-readers even make the virtual bookshelf appear like a real bookshelf with cover art and all. However, if we end up losing the physical copy book altogether and everything ultimately becomes electronic, will there be any need for cover art? How much does cover art influence you in purchasing or reading books? Might cover art be replaced with something more interactive like mini-videos about the author or the book?
