While having another conversation about law school website design with a colleague, the discussion meandered into those uncomfortably posed photographs we all grin and bear for the purpose of our faculty bio pages. It dawned on me that maybe a better way to go would be to hire a cartoonist to draw caricatures of the faculty rather than use boring old photographs. Or, as another colleague suggested, we could THREATEN to hire a cartoonist to do caricatures if people refused to show up to sit for the faculty portraits. Who wouldn't want to be the first law school to replace its photos with cartoons? I did some online digging and found one law student cartoonist who actually drew caricatures of his Idaho an BYU profs as well as some Barbri profs. They're really good. Take a look.
Yes! We lawyers should have more cartoons. And thanks for admiring my own.
I've never met him, but this professor does law-professor cartoons as well: http://legacy.lclark.edu/dept/lawalum/caricatures.html, which his law school even puts up online. And if you're looking for precedent, consider the cartoons this state supreme court justice drew from the bench: http://www.scribd.com/doc/3426040/PDF-of-Judicial-Notice-Catalog-C0464822

Ray was a student of mine at Idaho, and his caricatures really went a long way to create a sense of unity and camaraderie in the building. We missed him when he left to spend his 3L year at BYU! Not only does he brilliantly capture the physical features of his subjects, he really gets to the essence of their personalities, which is no small feat for any portraitist. Thanks, Jackie, for pointing to his work, which deserves attention.

I noticed a great caricature of you on his website, Annemarie.
He must have been a fun student to teach!
Congrats, Ray, on your terrific work.
