Following up on the post of the Oaklands Cemetery yesterday, I thought that I'd post a picture from a recent trip to the Chester Rural Cemetery, which opened in 1863 -- so this is a little past my usual time of interest. But a lot of veterans, especially Civil War veterans, are buried there.
The inscription is: "The People of Delaware County Erect this Monument to Commemorate the Patriotism of their Citizens, Soldiers, and Sailors Who Feel in Defense of the Union During the War of Rebellion, 1861-65."
"The War of Rebellion." They believed in truth in labeling in those days. Although I live in the South and like it, I find it ironic how the South, which is the only area of the nation to attempt to destroy its solidarity, considers itself so patriotic. It is also ironic that many southern politicians look with distain on New England and especially Massachusetts which is where our nationhood got off to its start.
