I am sad to report the news of the passing of one of my colleagues, Professor Steve Gey, who lost his battle with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) last night. Unfortunately, Steve went on leave before I arrived at Florida State, but I was well aware of his reputation as a great teacher, an amazing scholar, and a wonderful person before joining the faculty. He was well-loved by students and faculty alike. Steve's occasional updates about his battle with ALS highlighted his humor, bravery, and drive, not characteristics that you often see when someone is battling an incurable disease. This is an incredible loss, and he will be missed both at Florida State and in the Academy.
Thank you for this sad news, Franita. I'm sorry to hear this. I never met Steven, but his reputation went far and wide and I, too, took inspiration from some of his posts of the last few years.

This is such sad news, but his persistence in the fight over these last few years was incredible. He will surely be missed.
