I see that this news has already been posted by Brian Leiter, but I wish to add my congratulations to UC Davis for hiring my colleague Ash Bhagwat away from Hastings. I think I speak for more than myself when I say that Ash will be sorely missed at Hastings. Not only is he an excellent Constitutional Law scholar and teacher, he is one of the wiser voices in our faculty deliberations. Under the combined leadership of Dean Kevin Johnson and Academic Dean Vik Amar, UC Davis is making big strides in increasing its scholarly impact.
How does Hastings let things like this happen? This is a single instance in a consistent downward slide. Hastings is a once respected UC school located in the best city in America; it should have great recruiting/retention power. Davis and Notre Dame steal Hastings's stars while they import from Wayne State? A shrinking core of great professors is all Hastings has left. Looks like an unfocused administration sinking the ship. Sorry to lose you Ash, but I have a feeling you made a wise choice.

Dean Wu really blew this one. But man, I'm sure our relations with the Chinese Community are stronger than ever!
