Following up on my post about my trip to Courtland in Southampton, Virginia a while back, here are a few more pictures of the intersection of Meherrin Road and Blackhead Signpost Road in Southampton County. And if you're interested in the story behind "Blackhead Signpost Road," check out my article on "the Nat Turner trials," which is available free from ssrn. You might also like to compare the Southampton Blackhead Signpost Road sign with the "Soul City Boulevard" sign which is in Norlina, North Carolina. There's quite a bit of history from 1831 to 1972, that's reflected in those very different road names, isn't there? They are one hundred forty-one years apart (and about an hour-and-a-half if you're driving it today) -- but very, very different ideas.
