Master's in Disasters. That's the way they're framing it over at the Birmingham News at least. UAB is about to start the nation's first online Master's in Advanced Safety Engineering and Management, a program designed to help engineers plan for industrial disasters. The degree was in development before the nearby BP disaster, but sometimes marketing success requires a little kismet.
Meanwhile, outside of Jackson, Mississippi, they're euthanizing geese because the beasts poop too much in the parks at the Ross Barnett Reservoir. As one reservoir official noted, "They defecate all over the ramps and piers, where people are in flip-flops or barefooted." Some folks have questioned the rightness of this strategy, but one commenter to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger pushed back:
These geese are like rats! Kids playing soccer in goose poop and can't picnic at the rez without stepping and rolling in poop? If these were RATS at the rez no one would care. Well these are rats with wings!
Correction: PIGEONS are rats with wings. Geese are probably more like feral dogs with wings, at least by size and viciousness.
