Australia Appoints First Woman Prime Minister

Today (or really yesterday because of the time difference), Australia appointed its first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.  This was an internal change in the Labor Party ie it was not a popular election, but an internal switch of leaders of the party.  But Julia Gillard will run for PM in the forthcoming federal election and it will be interesting to see if the Australian population is ready to go to the ballots and vote for a woman as head of a major political party.
