Dan, what is a "shonda"?
That's a new one to me, so I tried to find an online definition. The best I could determine is "harm/disgrace/shame." Your context suggests that may be your intended meaning, but the defined term I found is "shonde."
Just trying to improve my vocabulary here!

Shonda is one spelling for the Yiddish word you reference: a pity or a shame.
