Once upon a time, we figured that when Laurence Tribe joined the Federal government, he'd be working for the judiciary. But time has passed, and the controversial professor is no longer destined for an Article III career. Instead, he's going over to the DOJ as a social changer. He will join the department as a "senior counselor" for access to justice. His job is apparently to start a program to help low income individuals get better access to legal services. It's not clear to me whether his efforts will primarily target indigent defense or focus more broady on delivery of legal services to the poor. This is clearly a worthy project and no less than incoming Baylor President Ken Start pronounced Tribe a brilliant choice.
