Against recent setbacks in Maine and New York, Tuesday's announcement that the DC Council voted to approve same-sex marriages is good news. So were the results of a run-off election on Saturday, when Houston became the nation's largest city to elect an openly gay Mayor, Annise Parker. News reports have stated that the election was full of anti-gay rhetoric, but to be honest, I didn't see much of it. My mailbox had been flooded with campaign flyers in the weeks leading up to the election, and only one mentioned Parker's sexual orientation.
Scarry stuff on the global stage, though. Lawmakers in Uganda are about to vote on comprehensive anti-gay legislation that would authorize the death penalty as a punishment for homosexual conduct. The news last week was that the death penalty provision had been dropped from the bill, but not so according to this CNN report.

I've also seen a ridiculous amount of material on the election and didn't see a single reference to sexuality. I didn't know for a long time.
