It seems that the popular television show, Mad Men, has started an underground style craze, including an official competition.
The look actually reminds me of a crisper version of the mods – guys in my Southern California high school who wore vintage black suits, fedoras, and white socks, listened to Madness and The Specials, and caravanned in scooters.
As they say, everything old is new again, but would this look pass muster in a typical law firm?
Back in law school, when I was still skinny, I had a very nice suit like that (it was vintage 1960s, in mint condition, originally from B. Altman & Co.), which I often wore as a summer law clerk. It made me feel very old New York riding the IRT subway dressed like that. Sadly, my middle-age belly would not look so dapper in that slim silhouette. Though perhaps if I grew a Van Dyke beard and adopted an eccentric persona, I could now pass for Bert Cooper if no longer Don Draper.

The suit sounds very cool, Eric. Did you receive any comments from the firm?

I did get some compliments, though most folks in that office had no apparent interest in how they or anyone else dressed.
