It's that time of year when deanship transitions begin in earnest. Now we learn that Mercer's dean, Daisy Hurst Floyd, will be stepping down and returning to the faculty this summer. She has been dean since 2004. Her six year tenure seems pretty average in the legal academy. This should be a pretty attractive deanship; Macon, Georgia is only about 75 miles from Atlanta and is thus ripe for dual professional couples.
For those of you who follow these the deanship market systematically, our current law dean search list is here. The 2008-09 list is here.
It's about time. The school has only gone down hill, way down the hill, during Ms. Hurst Floyd's tenure. With such a record, the question is, why is she being retained on the faculty? Get a clue guys, the law program is in the bottom rung - it's an embarrassment to its alumnae and Mercer at large. The program needs a critical, all encompassing revamping - for the better.
