Pantheon Books (a division of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, itself part of Random House, Inc.) is releasing a new biography of Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis this week. The book is titled Louis D. Brandeis: A Life and is authored by Melvin Urofsky, a professor of law and public policy and a professor emeritus of
history at Virginia Commonwealth University. Here's a synopsis:
Adam Liptak's review for The New York Times is here.
Mary Dudziak has a post on the book at the Legal History Blog here.
Other information is available here (amazon.com) and here (Barnes & Noble).
In addition to being the topic of a just-released biography, Justice Brandeis also is one of four members of the United States Supreme Court being honored this week by the U.S. Postal Service (the other three being Joseph Story, Felix Frankfurter, and William Brennan, Jr.). See story here. This brings to thirteen the number of justices so honored by the U.S.P.S. with a stamp. How many can you name? Click here for the list.
One final question: How many Brandeis stamps will it take for me to mail a copy of the Brandeis biography to Al Brophy, if the book has 976 pages, dimensions of 9.3 x 6.4 x 2.0 inches, and a shipping weight of 2.9 pounds?
I think Chris Bracey wrote a good article on Brandeis. check it out at: 52 Ala. L. Rev. 860.

Priority mail: 23 Brandeis stamps.
Parcel post: 21 Brandeis stamps.
Media mail: 8 Brandeis stamps.
Maybe someday they'll make a Justice McReynolds stamp. It'd be delicious irony to mail the Brandeis biography with McReynolds stamps.
