In just a few weeks, the fall semester will start. Many of us will welcome one or more colleagues who are beginning what we all hope will be illustrious academic careers.
The Cardozo Law Review De Novo has recently published a short article, So Now You're a Law Professor: A Letter from the Dean. The article is in the form of a letter from an experienced dean, addressed to a new law professor, offering advice on a variety of topics. The author of the letter is Frank "Tom" Read, who served as dean at Tulsa, Indiana-Indianapolis, Florida, Hastings, and South Texas. Dean Read penned the letter over twenty years ago. Some things have changed. Some haven't. Another former South Texas colleague, Matt Mirow (pictured), a founding member of the law faculty at Florida International, offers commentary on the letter through numerous perceptive footnotes.
The article is well worth reading and is available here.
This kind of advice is vital. Too many law students are going to face a workplace that has no "place" for them to go. Starting firms, throwing out a shingle and just trying ot make it are the only choices many law students have.
